    To: Whom it may concern,

From:  Sensei Albert John, Chief Instructor Street Smart Self Defense & Fitness School

Subject:  Free Women’s Self Defense Seminar and Safety Program (seminar approximately 1.5 hours) ages 13+.

Class curriculum varies by age level but covers the following basic elements within the 1.5 hours.

    1.       Being aware of your surroundings and taking control of distance between you and other people you don’t know.  Predators are looking for non assertive people.  They will challenge the weak to find an easy target.  You must me assertive and change TODAY.  If you walk around with your head in the clouds you are a target.  Use the buddy system whenever possible.  Travel in groups or with a friend in a well lit area.  I go into great detail on people challenging you.

    2.       Making a solid stance and not short stepping.  Most people when pulled short step which causes their head to go down which automatically causes their body to follow.  The rule of thumb is where ever the head goes the body follows.  I line the students up facing each other and they take turns lightly pushing each other on the shoulders.  The pushed student then falls back into a proper stance.  I spend a good amount of time on this until every student knows how to make a stance.

    3.       We then go into the scenario of an attacker grabbing your arm and pulling you.  Most people either immediately pull away causing themselves shoulder injuries and giving the attacker an added advantage, or their head drops forwards again giving the attacker an easier time of getting away with his or her victim.  I teach the students to make the same front stance and allow them to be pulled.  The attacker is immediately in a compromised position as the would be victim is now in a sold front stance and can easily throw punches, heel palms, or elbows to the attackers face.  In other words, He picked the wrong target.  Most attackers are going to give up at this point as they were looking for an easy target to begin with.  This particular target is a handful and not worth the effort.  They will move on provided the still can.

    4.       I then cover “Hair Pulling.”  This can and does happen to both men and women.  It’s dangerous as it jerks the head.  Remember the rule.  “Wherever the head goes the body follows.”  The technique is easy to teach and everyone loves it.

    5.       I also cover being pushed from behind.  As a safety precaution I make it VERY CLEAR that all students must place one hand on the head and one hand just below the neck on the back.  This prevents the whiplash effect.  Safety is a HUGE concern.

    a.       I have never injured a student and just recently was asked to assist with running this program in Moreno Valley at a locally respected Karate school, Taylor Martial Arts.  Master Dan Taylor knows that I am an expert in Self Defense at a higher level than average martial artists and assisted him with running 200 students through the same program at his dojo in Moreno Valley as a result of the tragedy that happened to Ms. Norma Lopez in Moreno valley , Ca.  I will be assisting him with running another 70 students through his dojo on September 25th, 2010.  I believe it’s time Perris and Mead Valley as well as other communities step up and do the same.  Our school students and citizens are equally important and our community certainly deserves to be safe.  Master Taylor is an exceptional instructor and has been running Free Women’s Seminars for many years in Moreno Valley with my assistance.  The City of Perris and Mead Valley need to do the same.  As a citizen of Mead Valley I feel obligated to make this happen.  Please join me in making this program a reality for all citizens of our wonderful community.  I am available for any and all cities to contact and will happy work with other school owners and or law enforcement to assist in putting together programs should they just simply ask.  I can be reached at any time by cell at 951-238-8057.

    6.       I also cover the technique of an attacker swinging at your face as if to slap you.  This happens and we all know it.  It’s a dominance move by the attacker to show his power and get you to submit.  I teach the proper technique to block which causes the attacker a great deal of pain.

    7.       Now the FUN STUFF.  I let one of my young students generally 17 years old and about 90lbs or so go absolutely nuts on a bag.  She will demonstrate hammer fist, knees, punching, elbows, and kicks to the groin.  Even as little as she is the crowd always gets the picture that if she can do it, so can they.  There is no doubt that if a stranger put their hands on this young lady or any of my students they would be in for a BIG surprise.  From here I demonstrate the proper way to perform each technique.  I have a group of young men or me come up and hold the bags.  The students get in lines and go to work doing five or six techniques.  As I blow a whistle the go to the back of the line and the next student comes up.  It’s a HIGH ENERGY exciting drill and everyone loves it.

    8.       At this point the class is basically over but I do cover some other techniques that the students do not practice themselves but only watch.  It’s essentially “Show Time”  I cover getting choked from behind, choked from the front, full nelsons, if an attacker has you on the ground face down and is on your back with his forearm pinning your neck and head to the floor, if an attacker has you face up and is on top of you.  I also cover if an attacker comes at you with an upward thrust sharp instrument (knife, pen, scissors, etc).  Because of the age group I do not cover guns.

    9.       With all grade levels I discuss bully prevention and fighting at school.  I cover what plan children should implement to stay out of fights.  Using their voice and being verbally assertive without threatening is the key to success.

    10.     With the Elementary students I do not teach combatives.  The bag drills are unnecessary and confusing for them at that level.  I instead cover more areas of stranger awareness.  For instance, if a car pulls up next to you and asks you where the post office is do you honestly believe a 6 year old knows the answer.  If a child wants to mail something they just hand it to mom assuming they even know how to.  I cover people you know and people you sort of know.  I teach the children to make big stances when approached and scream with their hands in the strangers face, “BACK OFF STRANGER.”  They will keep backing off into big stances as taught and continue screaming this until help arrives or until they feel they have an adequate avenue of escape.  If grabbed, They are taught to drop like a sack of potato’s and continue screaming the same “BACK OFF STRANGER” while wrapping one of the attackers legs with their arms and legs and ducking their head in as tight as they can.  This may not be the absolute best position for a young child to be in, but I can assure you the attacker has his/her hands full at this point and just want to get out of the limelight.  Their likely to just peel the kid off them and run like crazy.

    11. Finally I do give each student our participant a free guest pass to come train with me for one month so they can learn even more.  One seminar can give them a fighting chance.  Continued training will give the more.  Making it a way of life and becoming a martial artist will make them ROCK SOLID!  Training is much like another insurance policy.  You cover your car, house, boat, health, teeth, even your pets.  No one ever thinks to cover their SAFETY.  Imagine that in a world full of misfits, hoodlums, murders, serial killers, etc.  Please assist me in making our City SAFE.  I can not do this alone.  I need public support to make this happen.

My Background And What I Teach:

I teach a variety of martial art and self defense styles that I’ve learned over my 36 years of studying and teaching. I'm prior service US Army/NATO and have done my fair share of training and real world operations. The styles I hold black belts or high degrees in include but are not limited to Ninjutsu, Muay Thai, Krav Maga and Lotar. I simply call what I teach Combat Kick Boxing as I've taken the best from each discipline and poured it into this program. I started consulting for military and law enforcement about 10 years ago and eventually opened my doors to civilians. I now teach ages 4 to adult. The programs emphasis for the kids is on weight control, teaching respect for parents, teachers, maintaining good grades, building self esteem and you bet, learning to keep creepy crawly people away from them. In other words: “Stranger Awareness.” I teach the kids ROCK SOLID self defense. But they learn Control and Discipline along with this. The adult program focuses primarily on strength and endurance building mixed with much more self defense. Adults learn Knife Defense, Gun Defense, Stick Defense, and Hair Pull Defense for men and women, Multiple Attackers, Parking Lot Defense, etc. This is NOT MMA Cage Fighting. I do not want anyone leaving ugly or injured. Most adults have to go to work the next day and maintain a professional appearance. The foundation is Krav Maga, Lotar, Muay Thai and Ninjutsu. The idea is to get fit and learn rock solid simple self defense that works now. Not fancy techniques you have to practice for 5 years before you can apply them. I teach every control hold imaginable so smaller people can easily take down attackers twice their size and weight. Classes are perfect for beginners. They are taught at an easy to learn pace. Safety gear is used such as gloves or hand pads as well as forearm pads. Safety is a number one priority for all students. You will love this program. It is self defense and fitness for the average person and working professional.
