This past Fall, we at the Northwest Regional Office had been approved to join Panera Bread's "Day-End Dough Nation" program.  We were just getting started in distributing day-end bread products to some of our local homeless and low-income veterans in the Vancouver, WA area when Panera Braed, without warning, pulled the plug Sunday on this program here locally.

They are now doing something different with their local Day-End products...

    -----------------------------------

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Panera Bread Co. is opening its third non-profit restaurant where customers can pay what they wish for food.

The latest "Panera Cares" community cafe will open Monday (1/17/11) in Portland, Ore., its first West Coast location.

Panera opened community cafes last year in Clayton, Mo., and Dearborn, Mich. The restaurants are owned and operated by a nonprofit arm of the national restaurant chain, which receives no profit from the business.

So far, people have stepped up. Panera said about 20 percent of the visitors to the cafes leave more than the suggested amount, 20 percent leave less and 60 percent pay what is asked.

We here, at the SwVBRC - Northwest Regional office are sad to see the "Dough Nation" program end so quickly after we joined, but we wish them well in their new program to help the Portland, OR low-income and homeless.  Now we have to look for some other way to help our local Vancouver, WA homeless and low-income veterans in meeting their daily bread requirements.  If you know of anything, please contact us at 360 314-6325.
