In honor of National Military Appreciation Month this May, several
organizations our honoring our troops and veterans in special ways.
Here's
a round-up of several of these events and activities, including ways
you can help support our troops and vets year-round:
Activities
of National Interest
-- The Warrior Games:
Over 200 wounded active duty members and military veterans from each of
the military services are competing in the inaugural Warrior Games in
Colorado Springs, Colo., May 10-14 in conjunction with the USO, the U.S.
Paralympics, and Department of Defense. The U.S. Olympic Committee is
hosting the games, and offering its training center in Colorado Springs
as the site for the weeklong event, which includes shooting, swimming,
archery, track, discus, shot put, cycling, sitting volleyball and

Memorial Day Parade: May 30th is the XXIII Annual Rolling
Thunder ride on Washington DC. Riders assemble in the North Pentagon
Parking Lot at 8 a.m., and leave at noon to ride through our nation's
capital to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Honorary Marshals this year
include actors Gary Sinese and Joe Montegna, Military Marshal &
Reviewing Officer General James Amos, Assistant Commandant of the Marine
Corps, and Grand Marshall Peter Pace, former Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff. Visit the White House Commission on Remembrance website

The National Moment of Remembrance:
Established by Congress, this day, every May 31 at 3 p.m. local time,
Americans are asked wherever they are to pause for one minute in an act
of national unity.
-- The PGA Tour continued its
tradition of honoring our troops for a second year in a row. On May 5.
Country Music award winner Tim McGraw headlined a 5 p.m. ceremony to
salute military families prior to the start of the tournament. The
program included pageantry by military personnel, a color guard, the
National Anthem and a flyover by the Blue Angels right up the 18th
fairway.
-- Build-A-Bear Workshop is celebrating
Military Appreciation Month by supporting the USO and offering troops
and their families a military discount. The Build-A-Bear Workshop
Foundation will invite Guests to donate $1 at checkout registers May 3
through June 7 in any Build-A-Bear Workshop retail location in the
United States to support the USO, which provides morale, welfare and
recreational activities to service members and their families. Also
during this timeframe, all members of the armed services and their
direct dependents will receive a 20% discount on any purchase at
Build-A-Bear Workshop store locations in the United States with the
presentation of a valid government issued military identification card.

New York City's Fleet Week runs throughout Memorial Day week,
May 26 - June 1. The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, a Veterans Advantage
charitable partner, is co-hosting many of the week's activities in
partnership with the City of New York.
-- Washington, D.C.
region: Operation Homefront's D.C. Metro Chapter is working
with local businesses and residents to honor and support military
members and their families throughout the month of May. Operation
Homefront seeks attendees and participants to help support our nation's
wounded warriors and their families in these following events.
May
15: Armed Forces Day- "Guess the Wine" fundraiser at The Wine Cabinet,
Reston, Va.
May 18: Spa Day at Walter Reed Medical Center (Arbonne
gift bag distribution and spa treatments)
May 22: National Capitol
Region Deployed Family Day, The D.C. Armory
May 25: CDW Laptop
Presentations to Wounded Warriors, Walter Reed Medical Center
May 26:
CDW Laptop Presentations to Wounded Warriors, DeWitt Army Medical
Center (Ft. Belvoir)
May 29-31: Deployment Flight Kits Drive, Giant
Food Stores (locations across District of Columbia, Md., and Va.)
