WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. policy banning women from serving on submarines passed quietly into history Thursday morning.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates notified lawmakers in mid-February that the Navy would be lifting the ban - unless Congress objected.

Navy spokesman Lt. Justin Cole said the deadline for Congress to object passed at midnight without action.

The Navy plans a press conference later Thursday to talk about the new policy that will allow women to serve along side men on submarines.

Women will not be serving on San Diego-based submarines any time soon, Navy officials have said.

The six subs based in the San Diego Bay at Naval Base Point Loma are the Navy's smaller, fast-attack Los Angeles-class crafts, with minimal space.

The Navy has said there's room to accommodate women – separate quarters and bathrooms – on its larger subs, the ballistic missile and guided missile variants based in Washington state and Georgia.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates told lawmakers in February that the Navy would be lifting the ban on women serving on subs unless Congress took some action against it. Navy spokesman Lt. Justin Cole told the Associated Press Thursday morning that the deadline for Congress to act passed at midnight.
