Another 6 Month update from Learner Number 8!

Tuesday, November 15, 2011 20:23 | Jeffrey Backus

Once again, 6 months have managed to evaporate between my thoughts.  Not much has changed though, my trees are overgrown, the veggie garden is full of weeds and my projects have stalled.

At the end of November 2011, it will be three years since my retirement from active duty. It doesn't feel like three years, more like nine months or so. On the bright side, I'm three years closer to moving on to my next life adventure.

Apparently, another one of Al's prophecy's has become reality.  Shortly after I started my hiring process, Al talked to me about going in another direction.  He told me that my job would consume most of my time and that my contributions here would be much less.  I replied that I did not think that would happen, but it did.

As of 15 November 2011, there are approximately 93 learners in Eleven states.  Most of us have posted at least one time, a few more have posted two or three times and another few have posted regularly (irregularly in my case).  I have crossed paths with a few of my fellow learners on rare occasions.  The Boothe's, Ms Price  and of course Ms Grice.  I have been neglecting my duty to encourage my fellow learners to write and hope that I will do a better job of it in 2012.

Please spend a few minutes and bang out a paragraph or two on your own blogs, and maybe make a few short comments on the others while you are logged on.

Jeff, What a pleasant surprise to see you back in action after being AWOL for 6 months. I'm pretty much equally as guilty of the same action after spending a good deal of time trying to stimulate interest and seem to have failed miserably. I do thank you for your comment regarding my story about traveling in Russia. It was indeed an eye opening experience. Living here is the US is by far the best place in the world.
Hope you get your weeds taken care of. I have a tree service for my trees which works nicely when they become over grown.
    Semper Fi.

      Hi Carol,
I wanted to thank you for continuing to be an inspiration to me. I know that you signed up to serve our country during wartime and left your home at a young age to be part of the war effort as a nurse. You serve as a role model for other women being strong and going into unknown territory and then to go on and become such a high-ranking leader in the military. I can still see the picture of you having a cigar with all the high ranking military, being accepted as a peer long before women were readily accepted in the military.

Thank you for all that you do and CONTINUE to do in serving our country and supporting the efforts of all our veterans. I give thanks for you and all the women and men that serve and support our freedom. Happy Thanksgiving.
      God Bless,
      Chris

    Dear Jeff,
It is wonderful to see your post. I am a volunteer with the start-up of SWVBRC in 2008 and I remember meeting you and many "Learners" during that time. It is easy to have time pass by fast. What is wonderful about SWVBRC and its programs is the awareness that it brings of how much our veterans are doing every day to make our lives better. I know you continue to serve our country every day even though you have a different job now after retiring as a CWO-V from the USMC. As a volunteer, learning from you and Albert that service never ends for a Marine, I see how much our military and their families contribute every day to our country's freedom and well-being. I am very grateful that I can spend Thanksgiving safe in my home and in my community while so many troops and their families are protecting our country and not together for the holidays. I appreciate our military's unwavering commitment.

If you get a minute I would love to hear how your job is going and how you feel about transitioning from a career in the Corps to being a working civilian. As a civilian, learning from all of you through SWVBRC has inspired me so much that I have been looking for full time work where I can work with our veterans in assisting them with finding full time jobs. I have not found a job yet but I am not giving up.Even in this tough economy I am learning from all of you to "stay strong".

Thank you again for all that you do and continue to do serving our country.
    God Bless,
    Chris

DOD Welcome home-small.jpg A welcoming home for our Troops.

Welcoming home our men and women doesn't end after the crowd disperses, it MUST continue on for the life of the Veteran! They've served us, now we will serve them with programs that work so they reintegrate into society.

We are a national public benefit nonprofit organization that educates American Communities about best practices to serve Veterans.  We honor their service by empowering Veterans to apply their training and skills to successfully transition to productive careers and enterprises.

We provide free vocational training 24/7 to all of our members through our website, in addition to local events.  We believe the tenet that American Communities are the ultimate beneficiaries when Veterans claim their benefits and invest in productive endeavors.

The SWVBRC enlists the support of members of local Communities like you to increase Veteran awareness of the value of obtaining a VA card and receiving earned benefits.

Sponsorships, donations, volunteers and support from communities like yours enable us to reach out to Veterans and empower them to transition back into successful, productive enterprises that ultimately benefit all Americans and support future generations.
