REGISTRATION OPEN FOR 26TH ANNUAL SEA SERVICE LEADERSHIP ASSOCIATION’S JOINT WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM

Women from all service branches invited to attend

Washington, D.C. (November 5, 2012)– The Sea Service Leadership Association (SSLA) opened registration for its 26th annual Joint Women's Leadership Symposium, the largest gathering of military women in the nation. Women from each of the five service branches are invited to register. The two day symposium will be held March 10-12, 2013, at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. Attendees may register at www.sealeader.org.

For the past 26 years, the symposium has been an invaluable tool for servicewomen, giving them opportunities for professional growth, leadership development and mentoring.

With the theme, “Stronger Self, Stronger Service,” the symposium will provide participating servicewomen with tools for both their personal and professional lives, to make them better leaders. The symposium will feature a robust agenda on a variety of topics such as Bystander’s Intervention, Combating Sexual Assault, Improving Communication Skills, and an Executive Female Flag Session.

“The Joint Women’s Leadership Symposium is a powerful and energizing event that captures the imagination and impacts not only lives and careers, but as an extension, the entire nation.  This is a vitally important event which fosters an open environment, allowing women from all of our service branches to meet and learn from one another, as well as understand and appreciate the trails blazed by women who have come before them," said retired Rear Adm. Wendi Carpenter, chairperson emeritus of SSLA. "The symposium provides these women with a unique forum to address issues specific to them and their service.  It's a valuable and enriching experience for all involved, including the many men who often attend and join in the discussions."

Last year’s symposium was the largest gathering of military women in the world with some 1,700 attendees. Participants heard speeches from pioneering female leaders including Assistant to President Obama and Chief of Staff to First Lady Michelle Obama Tina Tchen; Former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michèle Flournoy; and Maj. Allison Black, a.k.a. “The Angel of Death,” the first female AC-130H Spectre navigator to open fire in combat operations, among other noted female leaders.

Established in 1978, SSLA is the only non-profit, non-political organization recognized by the United States Sea Services dedicated to providing professional development through networking, education, and mentorship of women from the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
